Breathe. Remove the idea that you have a "right" to live, and every instant becomes a precious gift. Every moment is a treasure, every touch exquisite, every smell is perfume, every sight a beautiful painting. Every breath a blessing. Breathe.

From the page: "Again, I'm not asking you to stop believing that people, or even these people, are in danger of Hell. I'm simply asking you to accept that, if the situation were reversed, you also would be offended. After all, don't you get offended when a Muslim says you're going to Hell?
Atheists. Same deal. It's irritating to you when they say you and your friends aren't going to Heaven because of your beliefs. But it's just as irritating to them when you say they're not going to Heaven, because there is no Heaven. And the irritation happens on the same grounds, which is, injustice. You hate the idea of all non-Christians burning for eternity, but you're telling them that the mass murderer and kindly grandma will draw the same eternal reward (or lack of).
Now, again, both of you are saying, "But I'm factually right in what I'm saying!" And that's fine. For this, all we're doing here is understanding why they're offended by what you say. That's it. Putting yourself in their shoes. Basic human empathy. That's all."

From the page: "We've all been there. You're walking along, minding your own business, when a gang of cocky, young bastards start hurling abuse at you. Most of us would just keep walking, or maybe, yell some insults back or flip them the bird. Elisha (commonly regarded as the Luke Skywalker to the Prophet Elijah's Obi-Wan Kenobi), however, decides to take it one step further. Invoking the name of God, he summons @#%@#%@#%@# bears to come and claw the @#$! out of them.
Christians are constantly asking for prayer in schools to help get today's kids in line, but we beg to differ. We need bears in schools. If every teacher had the power to summon a pair of child-maiming grizzly avengers, you can bet that schoolchildren nowadays would be the most well-behaved, polite children, ever. It's a simple choice: listen to the biology lesson, or get first-hand knowledge of the digestive system of Ursus horribilis."

A co-worker, writing her letter of intent for grad school, asked me what I thought the biggest problem was in healthcare today.
"It's the lack of healthcare for poor people," I replied. "Not only do you have the moral argument to provide health care to all people, but there's a public health aspect to it as well. If you have a percentage of your population without regular health care, you're setting yourself up for a pandemic, pure and simple."
So I was kind of stoked when I got forwarded an article urging the Knights of Columbus to enter the health care industry. The KofC got its start as essentially a kind of group life insurance for a bunch of parishoners. Think of it as "We'll all take care of each other's dependents if one of us dies". As things modernized, it turned into a bit more formalized life insurance, but that's essentially the official jist of the group. Yeah, they got "under God" added to the pledge, and have been annoyingly strident in thier anti-abortion and anti-contraceptive stance, but still, the core mission is taking care of each other.
Surely the Knights would follow thier core mission - taking care of all people - and make that the crux of any health insurance they'd offer, right? Thier members would get that, right?
Apparently not. Instead, this article urges them to create health insurance that doesn't pay for abortions and contraceptives.
Because Jesus cares more about that than taking care of sick poor people, right?

From the page: "Think that one through for a moment, folks. The new head of the Texas State Board of Education is an anti-intellectual. Note: he didnâ€t say this himself, he is quoting someone else; but itâ€s clearly a quotation he agrees with.
You can rail all you want and complain that I write too much about anti-science in the form of religious fundamentalism, but you would be wrong. I canâ€t write about this enough. Itâ€s a disease, a virus, and now the brains of millions of schoolchildren in Texas are at risk. Worse, Texas (along with California) has an unusually large influence on what textbooks get used in the rest of the country, because they are such a large market for the publishers. If this antiscience, anti-intellectual, anti-reality man gets to help choose what textbooks go in Texas, then you parents out there who are reading this in New Hampshire, in Wyoming, in Oregon, in Virginia â€" your own kids are at risk here too."

From the page: "Sometimes dumb sounds cute: Sixty percent of Americans can't name five of the Ten Commandments, and 50% of high school seniors think Sodom and Gomorrah were married."
